Dean Ornish is an American physician and researcher. He is the president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, as well as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Ornish is known for his lifestyle-driven approach to the control of coronary artery disease (CAD) and other chronic diseases.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Dean Ornish was born on July 16, 1953, in Dallas, Texas. He received his MD from the Baylor College of Medicine, was a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School, and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ornish is the founder and president of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute (PMRI), a non-profit research institute investigating the effects of diet and lifestyle choices on health and disease. The institute's research has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, and other leading medical journals.

Ornish's research has demonstrated that comprehensive lifestyle changes may significantly affect coronary heart disease, prostate cancer, and other chronic diseases. These lifestyle changes include a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based diet, stress management techniques, moderate exercise, and social support.

Ornish is the author of several best-selling books, including "Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease", "Eat More, Weigh Less", and "The Spectrum". His books convey his message about the benefits of comprehensive lifestyle changes and have been translated into multiple languages.

Ornish has received several awards and recognitions for his work in preventive medicine and lifestyle changes. He was recognized by Life Magazine as one of the 50 most influential members of his generation and by Forbes magazine as one of the world's seven most powerful teachers.
