Polydactyly

Polydactyly is the presence of an excessive number of fingers or toes.

The condition may be present as part of a collection of abnormalities, or it may exist by itself.
Inheritance[edit | edit source]
When polydactyly exhibits by itself, it is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.
Racial differences[edit | edit source]
African Americans are more likely to have polydactyly compared to Caucasians
Causes[edit | edit source]
Some of the causes include:
- Asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy
- Carpenter syndrome
- Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia)
- Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome
- Trisomy 13
- Familial polydactyly
- Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome
- Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome
