Oestrus ovis

(Redirected from Sheep botfly)

Oestrus ovis, commonly known as the sheep bot fly, is a widespread species of fly in the family Oestridae. It is known for its parasitic relationship with sheep, hence its common name. The larvae of Oestrus ovis are obligate parasites, meaning they cannot complete their life cycle without a host, in this case, sheep.

Life Cycle[edit | edit source]

The life cycle of Oestrus ovis begins when the adult female fly deposits her larvae in the nostrils of a sheep. The larvae then migrate into the nasal cavities and sinuses, where they feed on the mucus and tissue. After several weeks, the larvae drop out of the sheep's nose and pupate in the soil. After a period of pupation, they emerge as adult flies, ready to continue the cycle.

Impact on Sheep[edit | edit source]

Infestation by Oestrus ovis, known as Oestrosis, can cause significant discomfort and distress to sheep. Symptoms can include nasal discharge, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, the infestation can lead to weight loss and decreased wool production.

Control and Prevention[edit | edit source]

Control of Oestrus ovis is primarily achieved through the use of insecticides and management practices designed to reduce the fly population. Regular inspection of sheep for signs of infestation is also important. In some regions, vaccines have been developed to help protect sheep from Oestrus ovis.

In Humans[edit | edit source]

While Oestrus ovis primarily affects sheep, it can also infest humans, causing a condition known as Ophthalmomyiasis. This occurs when the larvae are accidentally deposited in the human eye, where they can cause severe irritation and potentially serious damage.
