The inferior frontal sulcus (sulcus frontalis inferior) is a prominent groove on the lateral surface of the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex. It runs parallel to the superior frontal sulcus and separates the middle frontal gyrus from the inferior frontal gyrus.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The inferior frontal sulcus is located in the frontal lobe of the brain. It extends horizontally from the precentral sulcus to the anterior part of the frontal lobe. The sulcus is bordered superiorly by the middle frontal gyrus and inferiorly by the inferior frontal gyrus.
Function[edit | edit source]
The regions surrounding the inferior frontal sulcus are involved in various high-level cognitive functions. The inferior frontal gyrus, which lies just below the sulcus, is associated with language processing, particularly in the left hemisphere where it includes Broca's area, a region critical for speech production.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the areas around the inferior frontal sulcus, particularly the inferior frontal gyrus, can result in language deficits such as Broca's aphasia. This condition is characterized by difficulties in speech production and writing, while comprehension generally remains intact.
