Nias, Indonesia (April 22, 2005)-- Hospitalman Melissa Boutwell holds a young Indonesian child suffering from a congenital heart abnormality as non-governmental organization "Project HOPE" volunteers prepare for their departure from hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) on their journey back to the United States. The child is one of two young Indonesian patients who will be accompanied to the U.S. to receive needed medical attention. At the invitation of the government of Indonesia, USNS Mercy, USNS Niagara Falls, and USNS San Jose are currently on station off the coast of Nias, Indonesia, to be available to provide assistance as determined appropriate and necessary with earthquake disaster relief efforts and provide medical assistance to those Indonesians in need. Mercy had been operating in the South Pacific Island nations providing medical and dental assistance to regions affected by recent earthquake damage.
