2021 St. Charles Bend strike

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The 2021 St. Charles Bend strike was a labor strike that took place at the St. Charles Medical Center – Bend in Bend, Oregon, United States. The strike involved technical workers who had unionized with the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals in 2019. The workers and the hospital's bargaining unit engaged in negotiations for a labor contract, but reached an impasse in December 2020. In February 2021, the union filed a strike notice, and the strike began on March 4.

Despite legal challenges from the hospital, a proposal by a federal mediator was accepted by both sides on March 13. Workers returned to work while negotiations for a contract continued, with a deadline of March 31. The strike officially ended on March 15, and a contract was eventually ratified by the end of the month.

St. Charles Medical Center – Bend is operated by the St. Charles Health System and serves as a major healthcare facility in Bend, Oregon. It receives patients from a large area of Oregon and is the largest employer and only hospital system in central Oregon. The strike brought attention to years of labor disputes within the hospital.
