5-Hydroxytryptamine - pronunciation[edit source]

(5-hy-DROK-see-TRIP-tuh-meen) substance found primarily in the digestive tract, central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and blood platelets. 5-Hydroxytryptamine acts as both a neurotransmitter (a substance that nerves use to send messages to each other) and a vasoconstrictor (a substance that causes blood vessels to narrow). Low levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine in the brain are believed to be a cause of depression. Also called serotonin.
