Angelic Organics is a biodynamic and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm located in Caledonia, Illinois, United States. Founded in 1990 by farmer John Peterson, Angelic Organics has grown to become one of the largest CSA farms in the United States, providing fresh, organic vegetables and herbs to thousands of families in the Chicago area.

History[edit | edit source]

The farm that would become Angelic Organics was originally purchased by Peterson's grandparents in the early 20th century. Over the decades, it transitioned through various farming methods, including conventional farming practices. In the late 1980s, inspired by the principles of biodynamic agriculture as outlined by Rudolf Steiner and the emerging CSA model of farming, John Peterson transformed the farm into Angelic Organics. The farm began its CSA program in 1990, with a focus on building a direct relationship between the farm and its consumers, providing them with a share of the harvest throughout the growing season.

Biodynamic Farming[edit | edit source]

Angelic Organics follows the principles of biodynamic farming, a method of organic farming that emphasizes the holistic development and interrelationships of the soil, plants, and animals as a self-sustaining system. Biodynamic farming practices include the use of composted animal manures, crop rotations, and biodynamic preparations to enhance soil health and fertility. This approach aims to produce food that is highly nutritious and replenishes the soil.

Community Supported Agriculture[edit | edit source]

As a CSA farm, Angelic Organics operates on a model where individuals and families become members or "shareholders" of the farm by purchasing a share of the harvest before the growing season begins. This model provides the farm with upfront capital to cover the initial costs of the growing season. In return, shareholders receive a weekly or bi-weekly box of fresh, seasonal produce delivered to various drop-off locations or available for pickup at the farm. This system fosters a strong connection between the farm and its community, encouraging local food consumption and sustainable agriculture practices.

Education and Outreach[edit | edit source]

Angelic Organics Learning Center, established in 1999, is an integral part of the farm's mission to educate the public about sustainable agriculture and the importance of local food systems. The Learning Center offers a variety of programs, workshops, and events for individuals, families, and school groups, focusing on farming, food literacy, and environmental stewardship.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Angelic Organics has played a significant role in the local food movement in the Chicago area and beyond. By providing high-quality, organic produce to its community and engaging in educational outreach, the farm has helped to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable agriculture and the importance of supporting local farms.
