Assassination of Pim Fortuyn

The assassination of Pim Fortuyn, a Dutch politician, occurred on 6 May 2002 in Hilversum, Netherlands. Fortuyn, a controversial figure in Dutch politics, was shot and killed by Volkert van der Graaf, an environmental and animal rights activist. The assassination took place nine days before the general elections, in which Fortuyn was expected to make significant gains with his party, Pim Fortuyn List (LPF).

Background[edit | edit source]

Pim Fortuyn was a former university professor and political commentator who had risen to prominence in Dutch politics in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was known for his outspoken views on immigration and Islam, advocating for stricter immigration controls and criticizing the Dutch multicultural society. Fortuyn's views and charismatic personality attracted a significant following, leading to the formation of the LPF in 2002.

Assassination[edit | edit source]

On the afternoon of 6 May 2002, Fortuyn left a radio interview at the Media Park in Hilversum. As he walked to his car, Volkert van der Graaf approached him and shot him multiple times. Fortuyn was hit in the head and chest and died shortly after the attack. Van der Graaf was arrested on the scene by the police.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The assassination of Pim Fortuyn shocked the Netherlands and had a profound impact on Dutch politics and society. It marked the first political assassination in the country since the 17th century. The LPF went on to gain significant seats in the 2002 general elections, becoming part of the government coalition, although the party's influence waned in subsequent years.

Volkert van der Graaf was tried and convicted for the murder of Fortuyn. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison but was released on parole in 2014 after serving 12 years. The motives behind the assassination were linked to van der Graaf's environmental and animal rights activism, with him stating that he saw Fortuyn as a danger to society.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The assassination of Pim Fortuyn remains a pivotal moment in Dutch history, symbolizing the tensions within Dutch society over issues such as immigration, multiculturalism, and the role of political discourse. It has led to increased security measures for politicians and a reevaluation of political extremism and its impact on democratic societies.
