Ballistospore is a type of fungal spore that is discharged into the air by a sudden, rapid mechanism. This mechanism is known as "ballistospory" and is a distinctive feature of several fungal groups, most notably the Basidiomycota. Ballistospores are an important aspect of fungal reproduction and dissemination, allowing fungi to spread their spores over potentially large distances, which is crucial for their lifecycle and the colonization of new substrates.
