Bayswater, Queens

Bayswater is a neighborhood located in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is part of Queens Community Board 14 and is situated on the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula, bordered by Jamaica Bay to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

Bayswater was originally developed by the Bayswater Land Company in the late 19th century. The area was named after the Bayswater section of London, England. The neighborhood was initially developed as a summer resort for wealthy residents of Manhattan, but over time, it evolved into a year-round residential community.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Bayswater is located on the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula. It is surrounded by water on three sides, with Jamaica Bay to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Norton Basin to the east. The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes, multi-family homes, and apartment buildings.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 United States Census, Bayswater had a population of approximately 12,500 residents. The neighborhood is diverse, with a mix of African American, Hispanic, White, and Asian residents.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Bayswater is served by the New York City Subway's A train, which provides direct service to Manhattan. The neighborhood is also served by several bus routes operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Education[edit | edit source]

Bayswater is part of the New York City Department of Education's District 27. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including Bayswater School (P.S. 104), Waterside School for Leadership (M.S. 318), and Yeshiva of Far Rockaway.

Recreation[edit | edit source]

Bayswater Park, located on the Jamaica Bay waterfront, is a popular recreational spot in the neighborhood. The park features sports fields, playgrounds, and a view of the Manhattan skyline.

Notable residents[edit | edit source]

Several notable individuals have resided in Bayswater, including Bernard Madoff, the former financier and convicted fraudster, and Phil Ochs, the folk singer and songwriter.
