Bemotrizinol (also known as Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine or BEMT) is a chemical compound primarily used in sunscreen products due to its ability to absorb both UVA and UVB rays. It is an organic compound that is part of the triazine class of UV absorbers, which are widely recognized for their high performance in sun protection.

Bemotrizinol is a yellowish powder that is not soluble in water but is soluble in oils. It has a molecular formula of C38H49N3O5 and a molecular weight of 623.82 g/mol. The compound is known for its photostability, meaning it does not degrade or lose its effectiveness when exposed to sunlight.

Usage in Sunscreen[edit | edit source]

Bemotrizinol is used in sunscreen due to its broad-spectrum UV protection. It absorbs both UVA and UVB rays, which are the two types of ultraviolet light that can cause skin damage and skin cancer. Bemotrizinol is often combined with other UV filters to enhance the product's overall sun protection factor (SPF).

Bemotrizinol has been approved for use in sunscreens in many countries, including the EU, Australia, and New Zealand. However, as of 2021, it is not approved for use in the United States by the FDA. Studies have shown that Bemotrizinol is not likely to penetrate the skin or cause hormonal disruption, making it a safe choice for sun protection.
