Bob Hope (born Leslie Townes Hope; May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003) was a British-American stand-up comedian, vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer, and author. With a career that spanned nearly 80 years, Hope appeared in more than 70 short and feature films, with 54 feature films with Hope as star, including a series of seven Road musical comedy movies with Bing Crosby as Hope's top-billed partner.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Hope was born in Eltham, London, the fifth of seven sons. His English father, William Henry Hope, was a stonemason from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and his Welsh mother, Avis Townes, was a light opera singer from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, who later worked as a cleaning woman.

Career[edit | edit source]

Hope's career in show business began on the stage. His first role was in a variety show in 1924. He made his film debut in The Big Broadcast of 1938, but it was his series of Road movies with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour that made him a star. Hope was also known for his work on the radio. He had his own radio show, The Bob Hope Show, which ran for nearly 50 years.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Hope married singer Dolores Reade in 1934 and they adopted four children. He was known for his humanitarian work, particularly his tours for the USO, where he entertained American troops stationed overseas.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Hope received numerous awards and honors for his work in entertainment and his humanitarian work, including five honorary Academy Awards. He has four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in radio, television, film, and live performance.
