Bruce R. Korf

Bruce R. Korf is a renowned geneticist and medical researcher known for his significant contributions to the field of medical genetics. He is currently the Wayne H. and Sara Crews Finley Chair in Medical Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and Associate Dean for Genomic Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bruce R. Korf was born in New York City, New York. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University, where he majored in biology. He then pursued his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, followed by a Ph.D. in genetics and cell biology from Rockefeller University.

Career[edit | edit source]

Korf began his career as a resident in pediatrics at Children's Hospital Boston, where he developed an interest in genetic disorders. He then completed a fellowship in genetics at Harvard Medical School.

In 2007, Korf was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Genetics at UAB, where he has been instrumental in advancing the field of genomic medicine. He has also served as the president of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG).

Korf's research primarily focuses on the genetic basis of neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. He has published numerous research articles and book chapters on this topic. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this disorder.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Korf has received numerous awards for his contributions to medical genetics, including the ACMG Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also a member of several prestigious medical and scientific societies, including the American Society of Human Genetics and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
