Algirdas Butkevičius in Oct, 2014

Butkevičius Cabinet was the 16th cabinet of Lithuania, in office from December 13, 2012, to December 13, 2016. It was led by Algirdas Butkevičius, a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), following the victory of the LSDP in the 2012 parliamentary elections. The cabinet was formed in coalition with several other parties, reflecting the multi-party nature of the Lithuanian political landscape.

Formation and Composition[edit | edit source]

After the 2012 parliamentary elections, the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania emerged as the largest party in the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament. Algirdas Butkevičius, the leader of the LSDP, was tasked with forming a government. The Butkevičius Cabinet was a coalition government, including the Labour Party, the Order and Justice party, and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, alongside the LSDP. This coalition held a majority in the Seimas, enabling it to govern.

The cabinet consisted of ministers from the coalition parties, with key portfolios distributed among them. Algirdas Butkevičius held the position of Prime Minister, overseeing the overall direction and policy of the government.

Policies and Achievements[edit | edit source]

The Butkevičius Cabinet focused on several key areas during its tenure, including economic recovery, social welfare, and European integration. One of its significant achievements was steering Lithuania into the Eurozone, with the country adopting the euro as its currency on January 1, 2015. This move was seen as a milestone in Lithuania's integration into European economic structures.

The government also implemented policies aimed at stimulating economic growth, reducing unemployment, and improving the social welfare system. Efforts were made to increase the minimum wage and to invest in infrastructure projects, which were intended to boost the economy and create jobs.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

The Butkevičius Cabinet faced several challenges, including economic issues and geopolitical tensions in the region. The situation in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 posed security concerns for Lithuania and its Baltic neighbors, leading to increased focus on defense and security policies.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Butkevičius Cabinet is remembered for its role in Lithuania's adoption of the euro and its efforts to promote economic recovery and growth. However, its tenure was also marked by challenges, both domestic and international. The coalition government's ability to navigate these challenges and implement its policies was a key aspect of its legacy.

Following the 2016 parliamentary elections, the Butkevičius Cabinet was succeeded by the Šimonytė Cabinet, marking a change in government and political direction for Lithuania.
