Charger (table setting)

A charger plate, also known as a service plate, charger, chop plate, or underplate, is a large, decorative base plate used to dress up and enhance the visual appeal of a table setting. Chargers are placed at each setting before guests arrive and are not intended for food to be directly placed on them. Instead, dining plates holding the courses are placed on top of the charger. The charger serves multiple purposes beyond decoration; it helps protect the tablecloth from spills and heat damage, helps retain the heat in dinnerware, and is removed after the main course plates are cleared, leaving the table setting less cluttered for dessert.
