The City University of New York (CUNY) is a public university system in New York City. History

CUNY was created in 1961 by the New York State Legislature as a means to provide higher education to the residents of New York City. The university traces its roots to the founding of the Free Academy of the City of New York in 1847, which later became the City College of New York.
