After joining the British Diplomatic Service in 1954, he served in various capacities, including postings in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. His tenure as the British Ambassador to Mexico from 1981 to 1983 was particularly notable for his efforts to foster better relations between the two countries and to promote environmental awareness.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tickell became increasingly involved in environmental advocacy. He was a key figure in raising awareness about the dangers of climate change and the importance of sustainable development. His influential book, "Climatic Change and World Affairs," published in 1977, argued that human activity was contributing to significant changes in the Earth's climate, a view that was ahead of its time.

Tickell's contributions to the environmental movement were not limited to his writings and diplomatic efforts. He played a pivotal role in the development of international environmental policy, participating in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992, also known as the Earth Summit, where he advocated for global cooperation to tackle environmental issues.
