Cystic basal cell carcinoma

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cystic basal cell carcinoma is a subtype of basal cell carcinoma, which is the most common form of skin cancer. This particular variant is characterized by its cystic features, which differentiate it from other forms of basal cell carcinoma.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) arises from the basal cells, which are found in the lowest layer of the epidermis. The majority of BCCs are slow-growing and rarely metastasize, but they can cause significant local destruction and disfigurement if left untreated. Cystic basal cell carcinoma is a rare variant of BCC that is often misdiagnosed due to its unusual presentation.

Clinical Presentation[edit | edit source]

Cystic basal cell carcinoma typically presents as a solitary, cystic nodule on the face. The overlying skin may appear normal or exhibit signs of telangiectasia, which are small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. The lesion may be filled with a clear or straw-colored fluid.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of cystic basal cell carcinoma is often challenging due to its resemblance to other skin conditions such as epidermoid cysts, lipomas, and dermoid cysts. A definitive diagnosis can only be made through histopathological examination, which involves the microscopic examination of tissue in order to study the manifestations of disease.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The treatment of cystic basal cell carcinoma typically involves surgical excision. Mohs surgery, a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer, is often the treatment of choice. This procedure allows for the removal of all cancer cells while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for cystic basal cell carcinoma is generally good, as this form of skin cancer rarely metastasizes. However, if left untreated, it can lead to significant tissue destruction and disfigurement.
