DVLA or Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is a government agency in the United Kingdom responsible for maintaining a database of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain. It is an executive agency of the Department for Transport (DfT).

The DVLA was established in 1965 by the British Government to improve road safety and ensure proper taxation of vehicles. The agency is headquartered in Swansea, Wales.

Functions[edit | edit source]

The DVLA is responsible for:

  • Issuing driving licences
  • Organising collection of vehicle excise duty (road tax)
  • Selling personalised registrations
  • Maintaining records of drivers and vehicles
