Arellano was not only instrumental in the club's formation but also played a key role in its early successes. His legacy extends beyond his contributions on the pitch; he is remembered for his vision and leadership in Chilean football.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

David Arellano was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1902. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in football, a passion that would define his life. He played for various local teams, honing his skills and demonstrating his potential as a forward.

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1925, disillusioned with the administration of football in Chile and inspired by a desire to create a club that would prioritize the welfare and aspirations of its players, Arellano, along with a group of like-minded individuals, founded Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo. As a player, Arellano was known for his agility, technical skills, and visionary play. He served as the team's captain and was a pivotal figure in Colo-Colo's early successes, including winning regional tournaments.

Arellano's playing style and leadership on the field were highly regarded. He was also known for popularizing the Chilena (bicycle kick) in Chile, a move that has since become a staple in the repertoire of skillful footballers worldwide.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

David Arellano's promising career was tragically cut short during Colo-Colo's tour of Spain in 1927. In a match against Real Valladolid, Arellano was struck in the abdomen by an opposing player's knee. He suffered from peritonitis as a result of the injury and died on 3 May 1927, at the age of 24.

Arellano's death had a profound impact on Colo-Colo and Chilean football. He is remembered as a martyr and a visionary who played a crucial role in the development of football in Chile. The stadium of Colo-Colo was named Estadio Monumental David Arellano in his honor, ensuring that his contributions to the sport and his club are never forgotten.
