Decametre (or decameter in American English) is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to ten metres. The unit is less commonly used than others in the metric system, but it serves as an important measure in various contexts. The symbol for decametre is dam.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The decametre is part of the International System of Units (SI), which is the modern form of the metric system. It is a decimal-based system of measurement that is used worldwide, both in everyday commerce and in the science community. The prefix "deca-" signifies ten in the metric system, hence a decametre equals ten metres.

Usage[edit | edit source]

While not as commonly used in everyday measurements as the metre or kilometre, the decametre is still important in specific fields such as geography, agriculture, and forestry. In these areas, it can be used to approximate area sizes (when used in square decametres) or volumes (when used in cubic decametres). For example, in agriculture, it might be used to describe the size of plots of land in a way that is more easily visualized than metres or kilometres.

Conversion[edit | edit source]

To convert decametres to other units of length in the metric system:

  • 1 decametre = 10 metres
  • 1 decametre = 0.01 kilometres

In comparison to non-metric units:

  • 1 decametre ≈ 32.8084 feet
  • 1 decametre ≈ 10.9361 yards

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The metric system was introduced in France in 1795, following the French Revolution, as a more rational and universal system of measurement than the diverse and often confusing systems in use at the time. The decametre, like other metric units, was defined based on natural and easily reproducible standards. Over time, the metric system was adopted by many countries around the world and was further standardized as the International System of Units in the 20th century.
