The Descendents are an American punk rock band formed in Manhattan Beach, California in 1977. They are considered one of the most influential bands in the punk rock and pop punk genres. The band's music is characterized by its fast tempos, catchy melodies, and humorous, often self-deprecating lyrics.

History[edit | edit source]

The Descendents were formed by guitarist Frank Navetta, bassist Tony Lombardo, and drummer Bill Stevenson. The band initially played a mix of surf rock and punk rock, but their sound evolved over time to incorporate elements of pop punk and hardcore punk.

In 1980, the band released their debut single, "Ride the Wild" / "It's a Hectic World," which showcased their early surf rock influences. The following year, they released their first EP, Fat EP, which marked a shift towards a more aggressive punk rock sound.

Milo Goes to College[edit | edit source]

In 1982, the Descendents released their first full-length album, Milo Goes to College. The album's title refers to lead singer Milo Aukerman's decision to leave the band to attend college. Despite Aukerman's departure, the album became a seminal release in the punk rock genre, featuring songs like "Myage," "Suburban Home," and "Bikeage."

Later Years[edit | edit source]

After Aukerman's departure, the band went through several lineup changes and released a series of albums, including I Don't Want to Grow Up (1985), Enjoy! (1986), and All (1987). Aukerman rejoined the band in 1996, and they released Everything Sucks that same year.

In the 2000s and 2010s, the Descendents continued to tour and release new music, including the albums Cool to Be You (2004) and Hypercaffium Spazzinate (2016).

Influence and Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Descendents have been cited as a major influence by numerous punk rock and pop punk bands, including Green Day, Blink-182, and The Offspring. Their blend of fast-paced punk rock with melodic hooks and introspective lyrics helped pave the way for the pop punk explosion of the 1990s and 2000s.
