Desulfoarculaceae

Desulfoarculaceae is a family of bacteria within the order Desulfobacterales. The family currently consists of a single genus, Desulfoarculus. These bacteria are known for their ability to reduce sulfate, a process that is important in the global sulfur cycle.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Members of the Desulfoarculus genus are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and motile. They are anaerobic, meaning they can survive in environments without oxygen. The primary metabolic process of these bacteria is sulfate reduction, in which they use sulfate as a terminal electron acceptor to produce hydrogen sulfide.

Desulfoarculus bacteria are found in a variety of environments, including marine sediments, oil fields, and hot springs. They play a crucial role in the sulfur cycle in these environments by reducing sulfate to hydrogen sulfide.

Importance in Biotechnology[edit | edit source]

Due to their ability to reduce sulfate, Desulfoarculus bacteria have potential applications in biotechnology. They could be used in the treatment of industrial waste containing high levels of sulfate, helping to prevent the release of harmful sulfur compounds into the environment.
