Dianna Cowern was born in Hawaii. She developed an interest in science at a young age, inspired by her surroundings and the natural beauty of Hawaii. Cowern attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she earned a bachelor's degree in physics.

After graduating from MIT, Cowern worked at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics as an outreach coordinator. She later moved to San Diego, where she worked at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as a science outreach coordinator.
