Diaphragm (contraceptive)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

A diaphragm is a type of barrier contraceptive device that is inserted into the vagina to prevent pregnancy. It is a shallow, dome-shaped cup made of silicone or latex that covers the cervix and prevents sperm from entering the uterus. A diaphragm is used in conjunction with a spermicide for added effectiveness. It is inserted before intercourse and must be left in place for at least six hours after the last act of intercourse. Diaphragms must be fitted by a healthcare provider and require proper cleaning and maintenance.
