Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The show depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a time-travelling humanoid alien. The Doctor explores the universe in a TARDIS, a time-travelling spaceship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilizations and help ordinary people.

History[edit | edit source]

The programme was first broadcast on 23 November 1963. It was intended to be an educational family show, using time travel as a means to explore scientific ideas and famous moments in history. The first Doctor, played by William Hartnell, was portrayed as a grandfatherly figure. The show was initially produced by Verity Lambert, the first female producer at the BBC.

Regenerations[edit | edit source]

One of the unique aspects of the show is the Doctor's ability to regenerate when mortally wounded. This allows the character to be played by different actors, with each bringing their own unique interpretation to the role. As of 2023, the Doctor has been portrayed by thirteen actors in the series, with Jodie Whittaker being the most recent.
