Elon Reeve Musk (born June 28, 1971) is an American business magnate, entrepreneur, and investor. He is the founder, CEO, and chief engineer of SpaceX; early investor, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; owner and CEO of Twitter, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; and president of the philanthropic Musk Foundation. Musk is one of the wealthiest people in the world.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He attended the University of Pretoria for a short period before moving to Canada to attend Queen's University at Kingston. He later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned dual bachelor's degrees in economics and physics.

Career[edit | edit source]

Zip2[edit | edit source]

In 1995, Musk, along with his brother Kimbal, founded Zip2, a web software company. The company was acquired by Compaq for nearly $300 million in 1999.

X.com and PayPal[edit | edit source]

In 1999, Musk founded X.com, an online payment company. X.com later became PayPal, which was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion in stock.

SpaceX[edit | edit source]

In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company. SpaceX aims to reduce space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. The company has developed the Falcon 1, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy rockets, as well as the Dragon spacecraft.

Tesla, Inc.[edit | edit source]

Musk joined Tesla, Inc. in 2004, a year after it was founded, and became its CEO and product architect. Tesla specializes in electric vehicles, battery energy storage, and renewable energy solutions. Notable products include the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model X, and Tesla Model Y.

In 2016, Musk co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company focused on developing brain–computer interface technology.

The Boring Company[edit | edit source]

Musk founded The Boring Company in 2016, which aims to reduce traffic in urban areas through the construction of underground tunnels.

Twitter, Inc.[edit | edit source]

In 2022, Musk acquired Twitter, Inc., a social media platform, and became its CEO.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Musk has been married three times and has ten children. He is known for his ambitious vision and outspoken personality.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Musk is the president of the Musk Foundation, which focuses on renewable energy, human space exploration, pediatric research, and science and engineering education.
