Environmental education (EE) is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment. As a result, individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.

Environmental education refers to organized efforts to teach about how natural environments function and, particularly, how human beings can manage their behavior and ecosystems in order to live sustainably. It is a multi-disciplinary field integrating disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, earth science, atmospheric science, mathematics, and geography.

Goals[edit | edit source]

The goals of environmental education are broad and include:

  • To foster clear awareness of, and concern about, economic, social, political, and ecological interdependence in urban and rural areas.
  • To provide every person with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment, and skills needed to protect and improve the environment.
  • To create new patterns of behavior of individuals, groups, and society as a whole towards the environment.

Environmental education follows several key principles:

  • It should be continuous and lifelong, starting at the earliest possible age and continuing through all formal and informal education stages.
  • It should be interdisciplinary, drawing on the specific content of each discipline in order to provide a holistic and balanced perspective.
  • It emphasizes active participation in preventing and solving environmental problems.

Environmental education can take place in a variety of settings, from formal classroom teaching to outdoor and community-based learning. Methods include:

  • Hands-on activities that engage students directly with the material being studied.
  • Field trips to natural areas, factories, urban centers, and other relevant sites.
  • Simulation games and role-playing to understand environmental dynamics and issues.
  • Project-based learning that involves students in research and action projects on environmental issues in their community.

Environmental education faces several challenges including:

  • Integrating environmental education into the crowded school curriculum.
  • The need for teacher training in environmental education.
  • Overcoming apathy or skepticism towards environmental issues among students and the broader community.
