Estradiol distearate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Estradiol distearate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that is used in hormone therapy. It is a long-lasting estrogen ester and a prodrug of estradiol in the body. Estradiol distearate is no longer marketed and was previously available only in certain countries.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Estradiol distearate is a prodrug of estradiol, which means it is inactive itself but is converted into the active hormone, estradiol, in the body. As a long-lasting estrogen ester, it has a prolonged duration of action relative to that of estradiol.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Estradiol distearate is a synthetic estrane steroid and a derivative of estradiol. It is more specifically a derivative of estradiol with two stearic acid esters at the C3 and C17β positions. Other similar esters of estradiol include estradiol benzoate and estradiol valerate.

History[edit | edit source]

Estradiol distearate was previously marketed in certain countries but is no longer available. It was used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and low estrogen levels in women, among other indications.
