Flumethasone

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Flumethasone is a glucocorticoid used in the treatment of various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It is a synthetic steroid that has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Flumethasone works by mimicking the effects of cortisol, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands. It binds to and activates specific nuclear receptors in the cells, leading to changes in gene expression. This results in a decrease in the production of inflammatory mediators and a suppression of the immune response.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Flumethasone is used in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, allergies, and dermatitis. It is also used in the management of autoimmune diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like other glucocorticoids, flumethasone can cause a range of side effects. These can include weight gain, osteoporosis, glaucoma, and Cushing's syndrome. Long-term use can also lead to adrenal insufficiency.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Patients using flumethasone should be monitored for signs of infection, as the drug can suppress the immune system. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, as it can increase blood sugar levels.
