Glovebox

Glovebox is a sealed container that is designed to allow one to manipulate objects where a separate atmosphere is desired. Built into the sides of the glovebox are gloves arranged in such a way that the user can place their hands into the gloves and perform tasks inside the box without breaking containment. Gloveboxes are used in several research and industry sectors, including but not limited to, nuclear industry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and materials science.

The primary function of a glovebox is to protect the operator from hazardous materials or protect the experimental material from the environment. To achieve this, gloveboxes are equipped with a transparent part, usually made of glass or clear plastic, allowing visibility of the interior. The box is usually made of stainless steel or another durable material that can withstand the chemicals or atmosphere inside.

Gloveboxes can be either positive or negative pressure:

  • A positive pressure glovebox is filled with a high-purity inert gas, such as argon or nitrogen, to prevent atmospheric contaminants from entering.
  • A negative pressure glovebox is used to contain hazardous materials, ensuring that they do not escape into the surrounding environment.
