Growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF9) is a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily that plays a critical role in ovarian folliculogenesis and the regulation of female fertility. GDF9 is specifically expressed in oocytes and is necessary for the normal development of ovaries, folliculogenesis, and the maturation of oocytes. Mutations in the GDF9 gene have been associated with various reproductive disorders in humans, including premature ovarian failure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other forms of infertility.
