Hypercorrection

Hypercorrection is a linguistic phenomenon that occurs when individuals overgeneralize grammatical rules in their speech or writing, leading to errors that are perceived as an attempt to use a more prestigious or "correct" form of language. This often happens when speakers try to avoid stigmatized forms of language or when they are uncertain about linguistic norms, resulting in the use of an incorrect form or expression. Hypercorrection is observed across various languages and can involve aspects of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.

Hypercorrection arises from the desire to speak or write correctly, especially in formal contexts or among speakers who wish to elevate their linguistic status. It is often the result of incomplete learning or misunderstanding of language rules. In English, a common example of hypercorrection is the misuse of subject pronouns following the conjunction "and." For instance, someone might say "between you and I" instead of the grammatically correct "between you and me." This error stems from the overapplication of the rule that "I" is the correct subject pronoun, without recognizing that "me" is the correct object pronoun in this context.

Another example involves the confusion between "less" and "fewer." Some individuals may hypercorrect by using "fewer" in all contexts to avoid the often-criticized use of "less" with countable nouns, leading to incorrect sentences like "There are fewer than ten items or less in the basket."
