KN-62

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

KN-62 is a selective and potent inhibitor of the enzyme calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII). It is often used in biological research to study the role of CaMKII in various processes.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

KN-62 is a synthetic compound that binds to the regulatory domain of CaMKII, preventing the binding of calcium/calmodulin and thus inhibiting the activity of the enzyme. This inhibition is reversible and competitive.

Applications in Research[edit | edit source]

Due to its selective inhibition of CaMKII, KN-62 is used in a variety of research contexts. It has been used to study the role of CaMKII in neuronal signaling, cardiac function, and immune responses. In addition, it has been used in studies investigating the potential therapeutic applications of CaMKII inhibition in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, heart failure, and cancer.

Safety and Toxicity[edit | edit source]

While KN-62 is generally considered safe for use in laboratory settings, it should be handled with care due to its potential for causing eye and skin irritation. In addition, it should not be ingested or inhaled.
