LANCL1

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

LANCL1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LANCL1 gene. It is a member of the LANCL protein family, which is characterized by a unique structural organization consisting of an ABC transporter fold and a G-protein fold. The LANCL1 protein is predominantly expressed in the brain and has been implicated in a variety of biological processes, including signal transduction, immune response, and metabolism.

Function[edit | edit source]

The LANCL1 protein is involved in the transduction of extracellular signals to the cell nucleus. It is thought to act as a receptor for abscisic acid (ABA), a plant hormone that is also present in mammals and has been shown to regulate inflammatory responses and glucose homeostasis. LANCL1 is also involved in the regulation of G-protein coupled receptor signaling pathways, which play a crucial role in many physiological processes.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the LANCL1 gene have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and intellectual disability. Studies have also suggested a potential role for LANCL1 in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, LANCL1 has been implicated in the regulation of insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, suggesting a potential role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on LANCL1 is ongoing, with studies focusing on its role in signal transduction, immune response, and metabolism. Understanding the function of LANCL1 and its role in disease could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for a variety of conditions.
