Leontodon saxatilis, also known as Lesser Hawkbit, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to Europe and Western Asia, and has been introduced to North America.

Description[edit | edit source]

Leontodon saxatilis is a perennial herb that grows up to 30 cm tall. The leaves are arranged in a basal rosette and are lanceolate to oblanceolate in shape. The flowers are yellow and are borne in heads that are 2-3 cm in diameter. The fruit is an achene with a pappus of white hairs.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Leontodon saxatilis is found in a wide range of habitats, including grasslands, meadows, heathlands, and rocky areas. It prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate drought conditions. In Europe, it is found from Scandinavia in the north to the Mediterranean in the south, and from the British Isles in the west to Russia in the east. In Asia, it is found in the western part of the continent, from Turkey to Iran.

Leontodon saxatilis is a food plant for the larvae of several species of Lepidoptera, including the Painted Lady butterfly and the Silver Y moth. It is also visited by a variety of pollinators, including bees, flies, and beetles.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Leontodon saxatilis is not commonly cultivated, but it can be grown in a sunny position in well-drained soil. It is a good plant for a wildflower meadow or a wildlife garden, as it attracts a variety of insects.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The leaves of Leontodon saxatilis are edible and can be used in salads. In traditional medicine, the plant has been used to treat digestive disorders and skin conditions.
