List of Sámi dishes

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sámi cuisine refers to the traditional food and culinary practices of the Sámi people, an indigenous group inhabiting the Arctic areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, known as Sápmi. The cuisine is based on the resources available in the harsh subarctic environment, including reindeer, fish, game, and berries.

Reindeer[edit | edit source]

Reindeer meat is a staple in Sámi cuisine. It is used in a variety of dishes, such as Suovas, which is smoked reindeer meat, and Bidos, a traditional Sámi stew made with reindeer meat, water, and salt. Reindeer milk is also used to produce Leipäjuusto, a type of Finnish cheese.

Fish[edit | edit source]

Fish, particularly Salmon and Trout, are another important part of the Sámi diet. They are often smoked, dried, or salted for preservation. Rakfisk, a traditional Norwegian dish of fermented fish, is also commonly consumed.

Berries[edit | edit source]

Berries, including Cloudberries, Lingonberries, and Blueberries, are gathered during the short Arctic summer. They are eaten fresh, made into jams or jellies, or used in baking. Akkerbær is a traditional Sámi berry dish.

Bread[edit | edit source]

Gáhkku, a traditional Sámi flatbread, is often served with meals. It is typically baked on a flat stone or directly on the embers of a fire.

Beverages[edit | edit source]

Coffee is a popular beverage among the Sámi people. Traditionally, it was brewed over an open fire in a kettle. Mead, a fermented drink made from honey, water, and yeast, is also consumed, particularly during celebrations.
