List of Lymph Nodes in the Human Body

The human lymphatic system is a complex network of lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, and organs that play a crucial role in the body's immune response and the maintenance of fluid balance. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that act as filters for harmful substances. They contain immune cells that can help fight infection by attacking and destroying germs that are carried in through the lymph fluid. This article provides a detailed list of the major lymph nodes found in the human body, their locations, and their primary functions.

Cervical Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

The cervical lymph nodes are located in the neck and are responsible for filtering lymph fluid from the head and neck. They are divided into two groups:

  • Deep cervical lymph nodes
  • Superficial cervical lymph nodes

Axillary Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

Located in the armpits, the axillary lymph nodes filter lymph fluid from the arms, chest wall, and upper abdomen. They are crucial in the body's defense against bacteria and infections in these areas.

Inguinal Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

The inguinal lymph nodes are found in the groin. They filter lymph fluid from the lower abdomen, external genitalia, and lower limbs.

Mediastinal Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

Situated in the mediastinum, the central compartment of the thoracic cavity, the mediastinal lymph nodes are involved in filtering lymph from the thorax, heart, and lungs.

Mesenteric Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

These nodes are located in the mesentery, the fold of tissue that attaches the intestines to the posterior abdominal wall. The mesenteric lymph nodes play a key role in filtering lymph from the intestines and associated organs.

Para-aortic Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

The para-aortic lymph nodes are found along the aorta in the lumbar area. They filter lymph originating from the lower limbs, kidneys, and testes/ovaries.

Supraclavicular Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

Located just above the clavicle, or collarbone, the supraclavicular lymph nodes filter lymph from the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. Enlargement of these nodes can sometimes indicate disease or infection.

Popliteal Lymph Nodes[edit | edit source]

These nodes are located behind the knee and filter lymph from the lower leg. The popliteal lymph nodes are involved in the immune response to infections in the foot and lower leg.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Lymph nodes are a vital component of the lymphatic system, playing a crucial role in the body's defense mechanisms. They filter lymph fluid, trapping bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances, which are then destroyed by specialized immune cells. Understanding the locations and functions of different lymph nodes in the human body is essential for diagnosing and treating various conditions and diseases.
