Luis Garavito

Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos, commonly known as Luis Garavito, is a Colombian serial killer and rapist. Born on January 25, 1957, Garavito is one of the most prolific serial killers in history. He was convicted of the murders of at least 138 young boys, although the actual number of his victims is believed to be much higher, possibly exceeding 300.

Garavito's modus operandi involved luring young boys from poor backgrounds with promises of money, food, or gifts. He would then sexually assault, torture, and ultimately murder his victims. His crimes spanned several years, with most of the murders occurring between 1992 and 1999.

Despite the heinous nature of his crimes, Garavito was able to evade capture for many years due to his transient lifestyle and the marginalized status of his victims. It was not until 1999 that he was finally apprehended by Colombian authorities.

Following his arrest, Garavito confessed to the murders and was sentenced to 1,853 years in prison, the maximum allowed under Colombian law. However, due to his cooperation with authorities and Colombian legal provisions, his sentence was reduced to 22 years. In 2011, his sentence was further reduced to 20 years, the maximum allowed for any criminal in Colombia.

Garavito's case has sparked widespread debate about the effectiveness of the Colombian justice system in dealing with serial killers and the protection of vulnerable populations. His notoriety has also raised awareness about the prevalence of child exploitation and abuse in Colombia and other parts of the world.

Despite his incarceration, Garavito remains a haunting figure in the annals of criminal history, serving as a chilling reminder of the depths of human depravity.
