Marichyasana is a group of seated asanas in Hatha yoga, named after the sage Marichi. This group consists of four poses that are designed to increase flexibility, strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, and calm the mind. Each pose in the Marichyasana series has its unique benefits and challenges, making them suitable for practitioners of various levels.

Marichyasana I[edit | edit source]

Marichyasana I, or Marichi's Pose I, involves a seated forward bend combined with a bind. The practitioner sits with legs extended, bends one knee, and places the foot on the floor. The torso twists towards the bent knee, and the arm on the same side wraps around the knee, attempting to clasp the other hand behind the back. This pose stretches the shoulders, spine, and hamstrings, and stimulates the abdominal organs.

Marichyasana II[edit | edit source]

Marichyasana II is similar to the first variation but includes a more complex bind. In this pose, the practitioner performs a half lotus with the foot of the bent leg placed on the opposite thigh. The bind and twist are then applied as in Marichyasana I. This variation intensifies the stretch on the hips and the groin area while maintaining the benefits of the first pose.

Marichyasana III[edit | edit source]

Marichyasana III, or Marichi's Pose III, is primarily a twisting pose. Starting from a seated position with legs extended, the practitioner bends one knee, placing the foot on the floor. The opposite arm then hooks over the bent knee, and the practitioner twists towards the bent knee. This pose strengthens and stretches the spine, shoulders, and hips, and aids in digestion.

Marichyasana IV[edit | edit source]

The fourth variation, Marichyasana IV, combines elements of the previous poses with an added element of arm binding and twisting. It is considered the most challenging of the series due to the combination of a deep twist, a bind, and the balance required to maintain the pose. This pose deeply stretches the shoulders, hips, and spine, and the bind intensifies the twist, offering deeper stimulation to the abdominal organs.
