Marlin
Marlin is a type of fish that belongs to the family Istiophoridae. They are known for their elongated bodies, a spear-like snout or bill, and a long, rigid dorsal fin which extends forward to form a crest. Marlins are among the fastest fish, but speeds are often wildly exaggerated in popular media, such as reports of 132 km/h (82 mph).

There are approximately 10 species of marlin, including:
- Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans)
- White marlin (Kajikia albida)
- Striped marlin (Kajikia audax)
- Black marlin (Istiompax indica)
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Marlins are characterized by their elongated bodies, a spear-like snout or bill, and a long, rigid dorsal fin which extends forward to form a crest. Their common name is thought to derive from a sailor's marlinspike.
