Melengestrol
Melengestrol (INN, USAN, BAN) is a steroidal progestin and antineoplastic agent which was never marketed. An acylated derivative, melengestrol acetate, is used as a growth promoter in animals.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Melengestrol, also known as 6-methyl-17α-acetoxyprogesterone, as well as 6-methyl-17α-acetoxypregn-4,6-diene-3,20-dione, is a synthetic pregnane steroid and a derivative of progesterone. It is more specifically a derivative of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone and is a member of the gonane (18-methylandrostane) subgroup of the 17α-hydroxyprogesterone family of progestins.
History[edit | edit source]
Melengestrol was synthesized in 1959. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system.
