Mononuclear leukocytes

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Mononuclear leukocytes are a type of white blood cell that have a single round nucleus. They are a crucial part of the immune system, helping to fight off infections and diseases. Mononuclear leukocytes include lymphocytes, monocytes, and dendritic cells.

Types of Mononuclear Leukocytes[edit | edit source]

Lymphocytes[edit | edit source]

Lymphocytes are a type of mononuclear leukocyte that are responsible for immune responses. There are two main types of lymphocytes: B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies that can bind to pathogens to mark them for destruction by other immune cells. T cells can directly kill infected cells or help regulate other immune responses.

Monocytes[edit | edit source]

Monocytes are the largest type of leukocyte and can differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells. They are responsible for phagocytosis, a process where they engulf and digest cellular debris and pathogens.

Dendritic Cells[edit | edit source]

Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells that process antigen material and present it on their surface to other cells of the immune system. They act as messengers between the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Function of Mononuclear Leukocytes[edit | edit source]

Mononuclear leukocytes play a crucial role in the body's immune response. They are involved in the detection, destruction, and removal of pathogens and foreign substances. They also play a role in the activation of other immune cells and in the regulation of immune responses.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Changes in the number or function of mononuclear leukocytes can be indicative of various diseases and conditions. For example, a decrease in the number of mononuclear leukocytes can be a sign of leukopenia, while an increase can indicate an infection or leukocytosis. Mononuclear leukocytes are also involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including autoimmune diseases, cancer, and infectious diseases.
