Navvy is a term used historically in the United Kingdom and Ireland to refer to manual labourers working in construction and excavation. Derived from "navigator," originally a term for those who built canals in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it later expanded to include workers on railways, roads, and other major civil engineering projects. Navvies were pivotal in shaping the infrastructure of the modern world, undertaking physically demanding tasks to create the canals, railways, roads, and bridges that facilitated the Industrial Revolution and beyond.

The term "navvy" originated during a period of significant canal construction in Britain, often referred to as the Canal Mania of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
