From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Nematospora coryli is a species of yeast belonging to the family Saccharomycetaceae. It is a plant pathogen that primarily affects hazelnut trees, causing a disease known as "yellow slime" or "yellow goo".

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The yeast species Nematospora coryli belongs to the genus Nematospora, which is part of the family Saccharomycetaceae. This family is within the order Saccharomycetales, which is a group of yeasts and yeast-like fungi.

Description[edit | edit source]

Nematospora coryli is a single-celled organism that reproduces asexually through a process known as budding. The cells are typically oval in shape and can form chains of cells, known as pseudohyphae.

Pathology[edit | edit source]

Nematospora coryli is a plant pathogen that primarily affects hazelnut trees. The disease it causes is often referred to as "yellow slime" or "yellow goo" due to the appearance of the infected nuts. The yeast invades the nut and causes it to rot from the inside out, resulting in a yellow, slimy substance.

Control[edit | edit source]

Control of Nematospora coryli is primarily through the use of fungicides and good agricultural practices. This includes removing and destroying infected nuts and maintaining a clean and healthy orchard environment.
