The Newar people are the historical inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding areas in Nepal and the creators of its historic heritage and civilization. The valley and surrounding areas consist of three major cities in the valley: Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur), and Bhaktapur. The Newar people are known for their rich culture, architecture, festivals, and cuisine.

The Newar civilization is one of the oldest in the Himalayas, with a history that dates back to at least the 3rd century BC. The Newars have played a significant role in the development of the Nepalese culture and Nepalese art. They were instrumental in the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism in the region.

The Newar people speak the Newar language, also known as Nepal Bhasa. It is a Sino-Tibetan language and has a rich literary tradition. The language has its own script, known as Ranjana script, which is used in religious texts and inscriptions.
