Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register
Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register
The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) is a public register of occupational safety and health (OSH) consultants in the United Kingdom. It was established to provide businesses with a reliable source of qualified and experienced health and safety consultants. The register is maintained by a group of professional bodies and stakeholders in the field of occupational safety and health.
History[edit | edit source]
The OSHCR was launched in response to the recommendations of the Lord Young report titled "Common Sense, Common Safety," which was published in 2010. The report highlighted the need for a more consistent and professional approach to health and safety advice for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Purpose[edit | edit source]
The primary purpose of the OSHCR is to ensure that businesses have access to competent and qualified health and safety consultants. Consultants listed on the register must meet specific standards of competence and professionalism, which are assessed by their respective professional bodies.
Eligibility and Registration[edit | edit source]
To be eligible for inclusion on the OSHCR, consultants must be a member of one of the participating professional bodies and must demonstrate their competence through qualifications and experience. The participating professional bodies include:
- Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
- Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)
- British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS)
- International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)
- Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS)
- Safety and Health Practitioners' Association (SHPA)
Benefits[edit | edit source]
The OSHCR provides several benefits, including:
- Assurance of consultant competence and professionalism
- Access to a wide range of expertise in occupational safety and health
- Support for businesses in meeting their legal obligations under health and safety legislation
Criticism and Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its benefits, the OSHCR has faced criticism and challenges. Some critics argue that the register does not go far enough in ensuring the quality of advice provided by consultants. Others have raised concerns about the cost and administrative burden of maintaining the register.
