Oil well is a term used to describe a boring in the Earth's surface designed to bring petroleum oil hydrocarbons to the surface. Typically, oil wells are drilled using a drilling rig that rotates a drill string with a drill bit attached. Once the well reaches the reservoir, the oil can be extracted, usually with the aid of a pump or by the natural pressure of the reservoir itself.

The history of oil wells dates back to ancient times, with the earliest examples being found in China around 347 AD. These early wells were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles. The modern oil well, however, was drilled in 1859 by Edwin Drake near Titusville, Pennsylvania, marking the beginning of the commercial oil industry.

Oil wells can be classified into several types based on their purpose and the stage of the well's life:

  • Exploratory wells are drilled to find new oil or gas fields.

  4. Evaluation: Various tests and logging are conducted to evaluate the presence of oil and gas.
  5. Completion: If the well is deemed viable, it is completed with the installation of production equipment.
