Palazzo Fremaux, also known as Palazzo de Fremaux, Villa Fremaux or Villa de Fremaux, was a townhouse in Żejtun, Malta. The building, together with a next door townhouse, was used as a hospital during the French blockade of 1798–1800. Despite being a designated heritage building, it was gradually demolished between 1990 and 2003.
History[edit | edit source]
Palazzo Fremaux was a townhouse surrounded by extensive gardens, which belonged to Count Agostino Formosa de Fremaux, a Maltese nobleman who supported the Jacobins and the French occupation of Malta. During the Maltese uprising against French rule, Żejtun became an important headquarters for the Maltese insurgents and their British allies.
The British used Palazzo Fremaux and its next door townhouse as a hospital for wounded British troops during the siege. However, no single building was large enough to accommodate all the wounded soldiers, so four sites were chosen, including Palazzo Fremaux. The building suffered damage during its use as a hospital, and after the blockade ended, it was likely left unoccupied for some time. It was later divided into several houses and underwent extensive modifications.
Despite being listed as a heritage building, Palazzo Fremaux was gradually demolished between 1990 and 2003.
